What’s my rising sign?

You’ll need your birth date, time and place. The answer is free, with no email.

What this means

Your rising sign, also called your ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. The sky turns once a day, so all twelve signs take a turn on that horizon, about two hours each. That is why your birth time matters so much for this one.

In astrology, the rising sign is often described as your outer style: the first impression you give and the way you tend to walk into a new room or meet a new situation. It is not the same as your sun sign, which is about your core sense of self, or your moon sign, which is about your inner feelings. Think of the rising sign as the front door and the other two as the rooms inside.

None of this is a rule about who you are. Treat the reading as a prompt for reflection. Does it sound like how a stranger might describe you? Keep what fits and leave what doesn’t.

Questions people ask

What is a rising sign?

Your rising sign is the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place you were born. It is also called your ascendant. Along with your sun sign and moon sign, it is one of the three signs people mention most.

Why does the calculator need my birth time?

The rising sign changes about every two hours as the Earth turns, so the date alone can’t tell us. Even a birth time that is an hour or two out can land you in a different sign.

What if I don’t know my birth time?

A birth certificate often lists it. A parent, a hospital record or a baby book may help too. If you can’t find it, your full chart still shows the sign of every planet. Only the rising sign and the houses need the time.

Does my birthplace matter?

Yes. The horizon is different in every place, so two people born at the same moment in different cities can have different rising signs. Choose the town or city where you were born, or the nearest larger one if yours isn’t listed.

Is my rising sign the same as my sun sign?

Sometimes. People born close to sunrise often share the two, because the Sun itself is rising. For most people they differ. Your sun sign comes from your birth date. Your rising sign comes from your birth time and place.

Is this rising sign calculator free?

The answer is free, with no email, no card and no account. The calculation runs in your browser, so we don’t receive your birth date, time or place. We also sell longer written reports, but you never have to look at them.
